TRAVEL

Kentucky Derby Musuem - See and Be Seen 150 Years of Derby Fashion

We still can’t get enough of Derby 150 and in July we had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of the See and Be Seen 150 Years of Derby Fashion at the Kentucky Derby Museum! It features 32 full ensembles including true vintage pieces starting from the 1860s. You might also see our outfits from Derby 149. If you are a fashionista of any kind, you will love seeing these Derby fashion through the years!

Bombers Baseball Game - Huntingburg, IN.

A Saturday baseball getaway to lovely Huntingburg, IN! Another of southern Indiana’s great small towns! We got to meet up with our friend Susan, who made us feel like family, and set up lunch for us to meet Huntingburg mayor, Neil Elkins, and his lovely wife, Susan!

After a little shopping at our favorite store in town, The Emporium (I may have picked up a lovely vintage 1960s pink rain coat and a vintage white wicker purse), we did a quick fashion change and headed for League Stadium!

For those not familiar, League Stadium is so-named because it is where director Penny Marshall chose to film several scenes from her movie, A League of Their Own (1992), starring Tim Hanks and Geena Davis. It is one of our favorite summertime movies!!

I have been wanting to bust out my Peaches uniform since I bought it during our visit to League Stadium last July. So, I did a little nod to the Geena Davis character, Dottie Hinson, and Jeff pulled off a darn good coach Jimmy Dugan, the Tom Hanks character in the movie. We had SO much fun!! Wow!!

The reason we wanted to go in character was that they were having a League of Their Own night at the ballpark, with a matchup between the Rockford Peaches and the Racine Belles! Racine won in a bit of a suspicious manner, but it was great fun! Following that game, The Dubois County Bombers battled the Full Count Rhythm (TN) in an exciting contest, with the Bombers coming up a little short - still, great baseball! The Bombers and Rhythm both play in the Prospect League, which features 18 teams across the Midwest. These teams feature top college players who are vying to be potential prospects for the big leagues.

If you are a fan of baseball OR the movie, and have never seen a game at this great stadium, you really need to put it on your bucket list! The atmosphere at the park is awesome!

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil The Musical - Chicago, IL.

What a fun trip up to Chicago! We had a break in our schedule that allowed us to go see the new musical at the Goodman Theatre - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil!!!

IT WAS AMAZING!!! Now, let me say that not everyone will like it as much as I did, I know that. But, I fell in love with that book several years ago, and have read it multiple times - I find it fascinating. We have also listened to the audio book - which I highly recommend - multiple times.

The story is based in my all time favorite city, Savannah, GA. It is a non-fiction novel by John Berendt. While a good portion of the book is about the murder and multiple trials of antiques dealer Jim Williams, it is also SO much more! The characters in the book are what endears me to it. The musical handles the story and the many characters SO very well. The music is wonderful (Jason Robert Brown’s best work yet). The acting is superb. The choreography is beautiful. The set design is magical. And the entire show is just plain FUN! There are very touching moments, don’t get me wrong. It has one of the most beautiful songs ever written for a musical, in my opinion, sung by the character The Lady Chablis (played to perfection by J Harrison Ghee).

I could give you a full review, but honestly, my opinion is going to just be “my opinion”, and it is skewed because I love the book so much. I was very thankful that the movie stayed very true to the book, as opposed to the 1997 movie version of the book (starring John Cusack and Kevin Spacey). I did not care for the movie. Anyway, if you have any interest in seeing the musical for yourself, it is currently scheduled to run through August 11 at the Goodman. I have a feeling, however, the run will be extended - and I suspect it will be moving to Broadway in NYC at some point this year.

And, we also had to visit “the bean” while in Chicago. It’s what you do.

Birthday Camping Trip - Columbus, OH.

Our first true camping adventure of the year! We’ve been out once before, but it was more of a working “Lucy & Desi” trip. We are just here for fun on this trip in Ohio!!

We’re calling this our “prep” trip for our next big trip up the east coast in August…all the way up to Prince Edward Island, Canada! I am going be in “Anne of Green Gables” heaven!!!

But back to Columbus! Talk about falling down a true life rabbit hole, that is what it feels like to explore Otherworld in Columbus, OH. My only regret is that I didn’t wear my Alice dress! This place is B-A-N-A-N-A-S! (Nod to Gwen Stefani). It’s hard to describe this immersive art museum except to say it is unlike anything you have ever seen - i.e., otherworldly.

We had an absolute blast in this place! The lighting, props, mirrors, sounds, music…everything, is well thought out and pretty trippy at times. They do have a bar in the entry area, but I can’t imagine having a few drinks and going through this museum. On second thought, I think I can imagine it, and it would be hilarious!

It’s very reasonable at $30 per person, with children 3-12 at $24 each. Kids under 3 are free. The space looks like an old furniture store warehouse and while it doesn’t look like much from the outside, the inside is about two hours of F-U-N! It’s for all ages, but I would imagine kids and grandkids would be able to burn up a lot of energy in this museum. There are tunneled areas that require crawling, but they are optional and you can bypass if you don’t want to get down on all fours.  Again, we had an absolute blast!! Next time, however, I’m wearing my Alice dress and Jeff is wearing his Mad Hatters hat!

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has a worldwide reputation, largely due to the efforts and promotion of director emeritus Jack Hanna. Yep! The same Jack Hannah that regularly appeared on the late night talk shows, including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson! His appearances on The Tonight Show with both Johnny and on David Letterman’s show were always some of the best!

It is regularly listed as one of the - if not THE - top zoos in the United States.

I am a zoo fanatic, so getting to finally visit this zoo was a bucket lister! It is HUGE! In comparing it with the San Diego Zoo which we visited last year, I would say they are equally impressive. The Columbus Zoo seems a bit more spread out, while San Diego seems a bit more modern. I want to visit both again in the future!

The Columbus Zoo features a great aquarium as well as Dinosaur Island. The island features animatronic dinosaurs that you get to view as you pass by in your 8-person boat. The island is a separate, but very reasonable charge of $4. The zoo itself is $35 for adults, and $28 for kids. They also have great carousel, which any park or zoo with a carousel gets  from me!

Circus Grimaldi - Corydon, IN.

Poster Artwork by Carrie Cooke Ketterman

This little circus travels throughout Indiana and Kentucky during the summer months with their band of performers, delighting young and old alike.

Is it Barnum & Bailey? No. This is a little circus with a very small budget, but a huge heart. It is “dream imagined” for an Indiana man, Clayton Cox, who, along with his small traveling band of entertainers, endeavors to bring the traditional traveling circus to small towns and communities each summer. Missed your chance to see it? Not necessarily. They have several dates on their calendar through August as they visit small towns in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Check out Circus Grimaldi on social and their website for upcoming shows.
